Programme overview

Do radiographers and nurses need refresher training to renew their radiation licence in Qatar? The people who operate the equipment and stand beside the patient hold an authorisation with an expiry date, and renewing it requires evidence of current training. This programme is for them: radiographers, cath lab and theatre nurses, nuclear medicine technologists, radiotherapy therapists and dental staff. It revisits how staff dose is actually accumulated in a medical setting — scatter from the patient, the hand in the primary beam, the unshielded doorway — and what the worker personally controls to reduce it.

Refresher training required to renew an expired licence

Course contentCourse content

tickWhere staff dose comes from in a medical room: scatter from the patient, leakage, the primary beam, and why the operator's position matters more than the exposure factors.
tickProtective equipment that works: lead aprons and thyroid shields, their inspection and storage, ceiling-suspended screens and table drapes.
tickFluoroscopy dose in practice: pulsed screening, last-image hold, collimation, magnification, and the habits that multiply dose without adding information.
tickPersonal dosimetry in the hospital: wearing the badge over or under the apron, the double-badge method, investigation levels, and the pregnant worker.
tickContamination control in nuclear medicine: handling, spill response, monitoring hands and surfaces, and waste segregation.
tickWhat to do when it goes wrong: a suspected overexposure, a patient dose incident, a lost or damaged source — who is told, in what order, and what is recorded.
tickPatient protection as part of the worker's job: identification, pregnancy checks, shielding the patient, and paediatric technique.

Why this course is required for renewalWhy this course is required for renewal

tickA personal licence is granted for a fixed term, not for life. When it expires, the holder is no longer authorised to perform the practice named on it — even if he has been doing the same work for years.
tickThe Radiation Protection Department asks for evidence of refresher training as part of the renewal file. A certificate from the original qualifying course does not satisfy that requirement, because the point of renewal is to show current knowledge.
tickStandards move. GSR Part 3, GSR Part 7 and SSR-6 have all been revised since many licence holders sat their first course, and the advanced programme is built on the current text rather than the one they were taught.
tickRenew before the expiry date, not after it. A facility that lets a radiation worker licence lapse is operating outside the conditions of its own institutional licence from that day, and that is what an inspection records.
