Programme overview
How do you renew an expired Radiation Protection Officer licence in Qatar? The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change does not renew an RPO licence on length of service alone — it asks for evidence of advanced refresher training against the standards in force today. This twelve-hour programme, approved by the Radiation Protection Committee, is that evidence for officers working in industrial radiography, nuclear gauging and well logging. It goes past the qualifying course into the three things an officer is actually judged on at inspection: the radiation protection programme he wrote, the emergency arrangements he can demonstrate, and the security of the sources in his custody.
Refresher training required to renew an expired licence
Course content — 19 modules
International standards for radiation protection and the safety of radiation sources — the current requirements of IAEA GSR Part 3 and what they place on the licensee and on the worker.
Occupational exposure requirements, public exposure control, and the transport of radioactive material under SSR-6.
Industrial radiography in depth: an overview of the practice, documented accidents and what caused them, the design and use of shielded enclosures, and site radiography procedures.
Gauging activities: nuclear gauges, well logging, and the accident patterns specific to gauging equipment.
Radiation dosimetry and organizational responsibilities — who carries which duty under the licence, and how that is evidenced.
Development and contents of a radiation protection programme — the document the officer signs and the inspector reads first.
Advanced emergency preparedness and response, and nuclear security of radioactive sources.
Safety and security culture, documentation, record-keeping and reporting, and the ethical considerations that sit behind a protection decision.
Who should attend
Radiation Protection Officers whose personal licence has expired or is approaching expiry.
Officers named on an institutional licence for industrial radiography, nuclear gauging or well logging.
Deputy officers being prepared to take over the role, and HSE managers who supervise a radiation protection programme.
Why this course is required for renewal
A personal licence is granted for a fixed term, not for life. When it expires, the holder is no longer authorised to perform the practice named on it — even if he has been doing the same work for years.
The Radiation Protection Department asks for evidence of refresher training as part of the renewal file. A certificate from the original qualifying course does not satisfy that requirement, because the point of renewal is to show current knowledge.
Standards move. GSR Part 3, GSR Part 7 and SSR-6 have all been revised since many licence holders sat their first course, and the advanced programme is built on the current text rather than the one they were taught.
Renew before the expiry date, not after it. A facility that lets a Radiation Protection Officer licence lapse is operating outside the conditions of its own institutional licence from that day, and that is what an inspection records.
