Programme overview
How does a hospital Radiation Safety Officer renew an expired licence in Qatar? The renewal file asks for advanced refresher training, not a repeat of the qualifying course — and for a medical facility the questions an inspector asks are different from an industrial one. This programme is written around them: patient dose in diagnostic radiology, fluoroscopy and CT; the control of radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine; the accident pathways specific to radiotherapy; and the shielding, quality assurance and record-keeping that a medical licence is assessed on. It follows the same structure as the industrial advanced course, applied to the medical practice the officer is named for.

Course content
International standards applied to medical exposure — GSR Part 3 requirements on justification, optimization and dose constraints for patients, staff and comforters.
Occupational exposure in the hospital: the interventional suite, the cath lab, theatre and the mobile unit — where the real staff dose comes from.
Patient dose in diagnostic radiology, fluoroscopy and CT: diagnostic reference levels, dose audit, and the optimization decisions that actually reduce dose.
Nuclear medicine: control of radiopharmaceuticals, the hot lab, patient release criteria, contamination control and radioactive waste.
Radiotherapy safety: the accident pathways documented internationally, and the barriers that prevent accidental exposure of patients.
Shielding design review for medical rooms, acceptance and routine quality assurance, and survey after installation.
The radiation protection programme, emergency arrangements, security of medical sources, documentation and reporting.
Who should attend
Radiation Safety Officers in hospitals, imaging centres, dental and veterinary clinics renewing a licence.
Medical physicists carrying radiation protection duties under a medical licence.
Radiology department heads and quality managers accountable for the protection programme.
Why this course is required for renewal
One role, two names. The licence issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change names the holder a Radiation Protection Officer (RPO); inside hospitals and imaging centres the same person is almost always called the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). This programme is the advanced refresher for that role whichever term appears on your paperwork.
A personal licence is granted for a fixed term, not for life. When it expires, the holder is no longer authorised to perform the practice named on it — even if he has been doing the same work for years.
The Radiation Protection Department asks for evidence of refresher training as part of the renewal file. A certificate from the original qualifying course does not satisfy that requirement, because the point of renewal is to show current knowledge.
Standards move. GSR Part 3, GSR Part 7 and SSR-6 have all been revised since many licence holders sat their first course, and the advanced programme is built on the current text rather than the one they were taught.
Renew before the expiry date, not after it. A facility that lets a Radiation Safety Officer licence lapse is operating outside the conditions of its own institutional licence from that day, and that is what an inspection records.
